The 2008 vintage delivered perfectly ripe Chardonnay fruit, which we have subtly enhanced with minimal use fo oak. The nose shows taut minerality with notes of lemons, peaches, limes and poached nectarines. The palate continues with great elegance; lemons, grapefruit fine acidity and a supple, lithe texture. Best enjoyed with food, this wine is drinking very well at release and will continue to develop over the next five years.

The 2006 vintage conditions demanded delicate handling of our Chardonnay fruit, which we have enhanced by a softening malo-lactic fermentation and 100% stainless steel treatment. The nose shows a creamy complexity of fruits, peaches, limes and poached nectarines. The palate continues with more peaches and cream, a soft food-friendly texture on the mid-palate and elegant length and structure. Best enjoyed with food, this wine is drinking very well at release and will continue to develop over the next five years.

Rockburn’s wine used to be made at the Quartz Reef winery by Winemaker Rudi Bauer. In 2006, we built the Rockburn winery on McNulty Road in Cromwell just in time for the very early vintage. We were mid-way through the 2006 vintage and were waiting outside in the sunshine for the next load of fruit to arrive when, oddly, the Quartz Reef forklift trundled up the drive carrying a barrel on the front. We had already collected all the Rockburn barrels that had been stored over there and were a little confused by this; even more so when we realized this barrel was full of Chardonnay! The 2005 vintage was so low yielding that only one barrel of Rockburn Chardonnay had been made (100% new oak), and subsequently forgotten and misplaced…. But now it had returned home!
