Vintage 2012 We’ve just started picking our grapes in Lowburn and the vintage is shaping up to be an excellent one. Thankfully there has been a summer in Central Otago with some good weather just recently to ripen the grapes up the level of Brix required. Then once all the stars are aligned and Malcolm ‘clicks’ his fingers -then its all go! What is a Brix? I hear some ask…. A Brix scale is a system used to measure the sugar content in grapes. Each degree Brix is equivalent to 1 gram of sugar per 100 grams of grape juice. (Throw that into the conversation at the next dinner party or pub and you will be sure to impress!) Once the grapes have been harvested in Lowburn we will commence picking off our vineyards in Gibbston a few weeks later. And what a bizarre summer it has been around the country unseasonal high temperatures in Auckland (25° as I write this!) with storms and rain coupled with lack of sun challenging our colleagues in Marlborough and the Hawkes Bay.
