Rockburn Fumé Blanc is a handpicked selection of barrels that most eloquently speak of site and season, and exhibit character above and beyond their cradle-mates. Although made from Sauvignon Blanc, what I am seeking is expression of minerality and texture, something far away from the "ordinary" as far as we understand Sauvignon Blanc to be here in New Zealand. Leave your pre-conceptions behind and this wine will open your eyes.
Our Fumé Blanc is a single vineyard wine displaying the richness and minerality created from out Parkburn Vineyard site, giving a richer, rounder take on the Kiwi favourite 'Sauvignon Blanc. Extended barrel maturation and malolactic fermentation induce secondary characteristics giving texture, length and weight to the wine. You will discover notes of white peach, petrichor, and wet stone; hints of pavlova dance on the rich but well defined palate.
Best enjoyed very lightly chilled. Cellar for a decade or more with confidence.
Reviews & Accolades
93 / 100 - David Walker Bell, Wine Folio - "A 100% Sauvignon Blanc wine, from the Parkburn Vineyard in Central Otago. An expression far removed from what the world expects from a Sauvignon Blanc in New Zealand. The juice pressed straight to French oak, and the best barrels picked by Rockburn winemaker Malcolm Rees-Francis for this special release. A shining pale gold colour in the glass. I’m noticing a definitive crisp seam of minerality in the best of the Central Otago white wines I’m tasting in the last year or so, and this has that in spades. A perfume that has a crushed-shell, wet stones and terracotta note laid over lemon peel, white nectarine and red apple fruit flavours. Dry, with a smoky barrel influence that works well with the ripe, juicy fruit. A creamy texture fills the palate, but the brisk acidity gives plenty of drive. A herbal, spiciness to the long finish".
18.5/20 - Joelle Thomson - "Single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc from Central Otago is a rare creature and this one tastes divinely complex with dry and creamy aromas leading into a flinty and fresh wine with layers of fresh picked herb flavours coming dancing on the palate. Extended time in oak barrels adds layers of depth and richness to this wine which tastes outstanding now and can definitely age for at least five to six years, most likely for a lot longer. This wine highlights the fascinating side of a grape usually destined for fruity light bodied wines but here is a full bodied wine that begs for a beautiful asparagus risotto".
5 Stars & 18.5+/20 - Candice Chow for Raymond Chan Wine Reviews - "Bright, medium straw-yellow, even colour throughout. The nose is gentle, enveloping stone fruit, citrus, flint and spice aromas. Full-bodied, ripe peach and Meyer lemon aromas entwined with stony minerals, smoky flint, custard and delicate spices. The fruit is lush and generous, broadens by a creamy palate; the lively acidity is integrated yet focused, carrying stony minerals and spice to a sustained finish. This barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc shows lush fruit and weight, complexity and power. Match with roasted pork and poultry over the next 5+ years. 100% Sauvignon Blanc from Parkburn, pressed to French oak barrels, no added sulphur, wild fermented to 14% alc, 2.5 g/l RS, natural MLF".
