The Rockburn Central Otago Pinot Gris 2024 captures the essence of its cool-climate origins, with fruit sourced from the high-altitude Gibbston sub-region. Known for its slower ripening season, Gibbston delivers grapes with vibrant acidity and expressive fruit character — think juicy pear, white nectarine, and subtle citrus blossom.
For this 2024 vintage, our winemaking team has pushed the wine, introducing a touch more skin contact to bring added depth, texture, and a delicate blush of colour. The result is a Pinot Gris with lifted aromatics, generous palate weight, and a whisper of tannin — a subtle nod to its textural ambition.
In line with our minimal intervention approach, the 2024 Pinot Gris has not been overly fined, allowing its natural character to shine. A subtle cloudiness may be present in the glass — a deliberate choice to preserve the wine’s tactile quality and complexity.
This makes for an incredibly food-friendly style, with a chameleon-like ability to match a wide range of cuisines, from fresh seafood and spicy Asian fare to richer poultry and pork dishes. While it’s already drinking beautifully now, this Pinot Gris has the structure and balance to reward those with patience, evolving gracefully over the next few years.
Reviews & Accolades
94/100 (5 Stars) - Sam Kim, Wine Orbit - "Delightfully fruited and elegantly expressed, the wine shows apricot, lemon peel, ripe pear, and jasmine aromas, followed by a succulent palate offering fine flow backed by fleshy texture and bright acidity, finishing long and refined. At its best: now to 2029".
3 1/2 Stars- Michael Cooper - "The 2024 vintage (***1/2) was hand-picked at Gibbston, partly fermented on its skins, and made with use of barrel-aging. Straw-coloured, it is medium-to-full-bodied, crisp and dry, with vigorous, peachy flavours, hints of ginger and spice, a touch of tannin and considerable complexity. Slightly austere in its infancy, it's a vigorous wine, worth cellaring.".
91 points - Candice Chow, Raymond Chan Wine Reviews - "Bright, even, medium straw yellow. The nose is full, with aromas of ripe pear, apricot, white floral and spice. Medium-bodied, dry to taste, aromas of autumn pear and apricot melded with a hint of grapefruit, wildflower and a touch of spice. Pear-skin-like phenolics contribute to a chewy texture, along with lively acidity, bringing a dry, refreshing finish. Match with mackerel and pork belly over the next 3 years".
91 Points - James Suckling "Copper-salmon in appearance. Aromas of cantaloupe, mandarin zest, ginger and lemon curd. The palate is medium-bodied with a creamy texture and balanced acidity. Nicely rounded and generous".
